Data Center Tech Blog

Once again, the first week of December will find many of the folks from SanDisk®’s enterprise solutions team at the Gartner Data Center, Infrastructure and Operations Management Conference at the Venetian in Las Vegas.

This year we see an even greater interest in the flash-based systems and software that SanDisk has brought to market. And it’s no wonder, as the industry is having a sharper focus on flash. Gartner analysts now include Read/Write Flash Caching and I/O Optimization in their Hype Cycle for Storage Technologies, identifying the relatively low cost of server flash and the significant benefit of reduced storage latency. Additionally, Gartner have introduced their first Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays, including the strategic planning assumption that by 2019, 20% of traditional high-end storage arrays would be replaced by dedicated solid-state arrays, producing aggressive growth in the sector.

Since last year’s Gartner conference, our portfolio of flash systems and software has grown considerably as a result of SanDisk’s acquisition of Fusion-io. In addition to our FlashSoft software, we now support customers running the ioTurbine caching software, and like FlashSoft, ioTurbine is now available for use on all SSDs. Our enterprise systems and software business now includes the ION Accelerator flash appliance, which provides extremely low latency to enterprise databases.

In the past year we have also strengthened our partnerships with industry leaders such as Dell and VMware. In August, the SanDisk team was identified as VMware’s development partner for the vSphere APIs for IO Filtering (VAIO), the APIs that will be available in the next major version of the ESX hypervisor, to support the integration of third-party caching solutions like FlashSoft. The APIs, and the next version of FlashSoft that is integrated with vSphere through those APIs, will be available in the first half of 2015.

Two of our flagship software products became a part of Dell’s enterprise product portfolio this year. The Dell Acceleration Appliance for Databases leverages the ION Accelerator software originally developed at Fusion-io. Also, with the introduction of the latest generation of Dell PowerEdge servers, Dell has made the SanDisk DAS Cache available for servers with solid-state memory that access direct-attached storage. The software, which is based on our FlashSoft software, is sold and supported by Dell globally.

At last year’s Gartner conference, SanDisk hosted a panel discussion in which four customers described their experience enabling server-side solid-state acceleration with FlashSoft software from SanDisk. This year we will introduce another customer using FlashSoft software. Mike Campling, Data Center & Virtualization Architect for the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa will speak directly about how he virtualized his organization’s most critical applications and databases without performance bottlenecks through server flash caching enabled by FlashSoft.

Casino Doesn’t Gamble with Virtualization – Uses Flash Intelligently

In short, we are more excited than ever to participate in this year’s Gartner Data Center Conference. A lot has changed for our enterprise business, and we are glad to share what’s new and what’s ahead for us. If you are making plans to attend the conference in Las Vegas next week, we’d be glad to meet you there.
